I wanted to be able to talk on the trail to my buddies (Dave &
Shane). The only way to do that is with a CB Radio. Me &
Dave both installed Radio
Shack TRC-503 Mini Mobile CB's. We both decided to go with 4'
Whip antenna's. Because I installed my CB inside of the center
compartment, the built in speaker becomes useless if the lid is
closed. To rectify the speaker problem I also purchased an external
8ohm speaker from Radio
Shack, # 21-549.
The installation was smooth, no problems. I decided for aesthetic
reasons, to install my CB in the center console & the antenna on the
rear bumper.
- I removed the entire center console.
- I mounted the CB Radio inside the lockable compartment (this
required drilling to small holes).
- I drilled a 3/4" hole through the bottom of the
compartment. This hole was used for running the cables out of
the compartment & underneath the center console to the dash board.
- The antenna cable was run through the rubber plug in the firewall
into the engine compartment. I managed to get the cable into the
frame & run it the entire length of the Jeep to the rear passenger
side.
- I removed the bumper end cap & mounted the whip to it with large
washers on the top & inside (for support on the plastic).
- I mounted the external speaker under the passenger's side dash
behind the factory stereo speaker.
- To power the CB Radio I used the switched auxiliary spare power
cable which is located behind the glove compartment (Tagged) &
grounded it to the dash frame.
Results: Installation was pretty simple & it seems to
work well so far. I am glad I concealed the CB unit, as it keeps the
interior looking tidy. I am also glad I installed the external speaker
it's LOUD, I will never not be able to hear my buddies.
Installation Time: 3 Hours
Total Cost: CB Radio $ 69.00 , Antenna $
49.00, External Speaker $ 25.00
Additional antenna cable $ 12.00 = $155.00 CAN
